How Does LANAP® Laser Therapy Work?
LANAP® (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a minimally invasive, FDA-cleared laser treatment designed to eliminate the bacteria that cause gum disease while protecting as much healthy tissue as possible. Unlike traditional gum surgery, which relies on scalpels and sutures, LANAP uses a precise dental laser to target infected tissue — making it a gentler, more comfortable option for patients with moderate to severe periodontitis.
The procedure begins with a thorough measurement of the gum pockets around each tooth to assess the depth and severity of the infection. The laser is then carefully guided into these pockets to remove diseased tissue and destroy harmful bacteria, leaving surrounding healthy gum tissue completely intact.
After the infected tissue is cleared, ultrasonic instruments are used to remove calculus, plaque, and bacterial deposits from the surfaces of the tooth roots. The laser is then applied a second time to disinfect the area and form a stable blood clot that seals the pocket — reducing the risk of reinfection and supporting the healing process.
In some cases, your bite may be lightly adjusted to relieve pressure on the treated teeth, giving the gums and bone the best possible environment for recovery. Over time, the body's natural healing response promotes new attachment between the gum tissue and the tooth root, and in many cases, patients experience measurable bone regeneration — helping to stabilize teeth that had been compromised by advanced gum disease.
Because LANAP does not require cutting or stitches, most patients experience less post-procedure discomfort, reduced swelling, and a significantly faster recovery than with conventional surgery. It's an effective, tissue-preserving solution for patients who want to protect their smile without the downtime of traditional gum procedures.
